I Want to Make a Bedroom Security System Using Serial Port of Computer?

I want to have a similar setup as this, except I want to replace the photoresistor with a switch. I want to design the circuit so that when the switch is on, nothing will hapen, but when the switch turns off, it will trigger an alarm.

I have been to the website but the source code wouldn’t compile for me. Anyone have any ideas or helpful websites?
