Dovell Bonnett asked:

It’s strange how the network security policies in place at a company can actually damage, rather than enhance their security. Security measures which are too stringent can lead to employees going around security for convenience’s sake. Employees can actually create security vulnerabilities which your IT department may not be able to protect against; because they may be unaware that they exist!

Not long ago, I spoke with the business director of a large company (I’ll call her Susan). Her company’s IT department requires employee passwords for their network be at least eight characters in length and be comprised of a random mix of letters, symbols and numbers. She also must change her passwords every sixty days. While Susan goes along with the security policies put in place by her IT department, if you were to walk into her office, she has her logon password written right there on her desk - “Password: 1jy^hndT”.

The work environment in many companies these days involves understaffing, tight deadlines and long workdays. When you add yet another complication into the lives of already overworked employees, it is only natural that they choose convenience over security. You see everyone doing this; from the CEO on down to the temps. While it sounds like a good idea to have employees remember complex passwords, what happens in practice is that it slows things down and leads to security being circumvented.

The real problem isn’t the security policy; it’s actually a very sound one - it’s the way that it is implemented which makes it a problem. IT departments are prone to ignoring the human factor when they design security policies. Most people can’t remember two complex passwords; and many can’t even remember one! By making employees change their passwords every two to three months, they further complicate the situation and practically force employees to engage in insecure practices in order to get their work done while still complying with corporate security policies.

This gives management a false sense of security when it comes to network security, since they don’t even know where to look for potential problems. Let’s say that someone copies down Susan’s password and logs in as her - the network monitoring software simply accepts as fact that she is working at 3 am. These security systems will not be able to prevent these attacks until the damage has already been done.

Password security which does not offer convenient implementation is not something which comes without a cost. Resetting passwords can take anywhere from 20% to 50 % of an IT departments time - this translates into about $70/incident. This time and money could be better used by your IT department. There are other costs; lost productivity when employees are unable to access the network.

A rule of thumb to keep in mind is that the greater the level of password security without a convenient management system in place, the more often you’ll need to do password resets. Smartcard security tokens offer a solution which balances productivity, security and technical support.

Smartcard based security tokens allow employees to manage network and computer security themselves without compromising the security of your corporate network. They do this by:

1. Offering double, two factor authentication - the user has the card (something they have) and the PIN (something they know). The computer has the card (something it has) and stored complex passwords (something it knows).

2. Being portable to other machines.

3. Having no information is stored on the computer for prying eyes to find and use.

4. Convenience - the user only needs one password.

5. Employees always have possession of their passwords.

6. Token data is securely stored and protected in the event that the token is stolen or lost.

7. The token can store passwords for many accounts.

Smartcard based security tokens prevent data thieves from merely looking over someone’s shoulder to learn passwords or look for notes taped to desks or inside drawers bearing this information. If each account is set with its own unique password, even if a data thief somehow gets one password, all other accounts are still protected. Smartcard based security tokens allow employees to stay within IT security policies and keep corporate networks better protected while offering the convenience employees want and need. This can make even the most careless employee a security conscious one.

GUADALUPE

Oswald J. Eppers asked:

In the wake of 9/11 the homeland security business is still booming, and now it eclipses mature enterprises like movie-making and the music industry in annual revenue. In this multi-billion business airport security was the initial focus, but during the past years the industry has expanded into a wide range of companies hawking all kinds of products and services for securing nearly every imaginable terrorist target. The homeland security industry now includes border, rail, seaport, industrial and nuclear plant protection as well as chemical, biological and radiological detection. One of the biggest customer in the field is a post-9/11 creation, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. This is a federal agency whose primary mission is to help prevent, protect against, and respond to acts of terrorism on United States soil. Apart from the “traditional” duties, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security received in April this year authority from the congress to waive all legal requirements necessary to expeditiously install additional physical barriers and roads at the border to deter illegal activity. According to Secretary Chertoff: “Criminal activity at the border does not stop for endless debate or protracted litigation,” “Congress and the American public have been adamant that they want and expect border security. We’re serious about delivering it, and these waivers will enable important security projects to keep moving forward.” This extention of activities will again boost the job market and if you are interested in working in this field you should consider to jump on the train. Actually there are over 20,000 jobs published on the internet and the trend is going up (see resource box).

Climate change is an other challenge that will requiere more investments in the homeland security field in the future. According to an article published by Joshua W. Busby of the University of Texas at Austin in the Washington Post on March 22, 2008, the US government needs to take action on risk reduction and adaptation, mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, and institutional changes in the U.S. government to prepare the U.S. to deal with the threat posed by global climatic disruption.

“Climate and security concerns do not get the attention they deserve in the U.S. government because they have few high-level champions. A new deputy undersecretary of defense position for environmental security should be created to redress the insufficient institutionalization of climate and environmental concerns in the Department of Defense. That said, we should not confuse national defense with what the military can do. As the risk reduction agenda makes clear, other instruments of national power will also be needed. To that end, the U.S. needs several senior positions in the National Security Council dedicated to environmental security, including a Deputy National Security Advisor for Sustainable Development to guide the inter-agency process. The links between climate and security still might not get sufficient attention. A special advisor to the president on climate change with some budgetary authority might also help.”

As a conclusion, homeland security is a booming market for job seekers and the trend will continue for at least five to ten years more. One major terrorist attack in the United States, Europe or Japan could increase the global market in 2015 to $730 billion, more than a twelvefold increase from today’s level, according to Tomer Amit, vice president of Homeland Security Research. “Most of the growth this decade will come from building what Homeland Security Research calls “a homeland defense infrastructure.” Growth areas are likely to include technology for surveillance and for detection of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction”, Amit says.

All indicators are showing green light for starting a career in this promising and highly interesting industry.

DOMINICK

Make the Internet safe for your PCs and Network. In an increasingly complex network environment an integrated UTM device provides streamlined management efforts, easy installation, and multiple layers of network protection.

Gone are the days when a dedicated firewall is sufficient to fend off hackers from cooperate networks. Unified Threat Management (UTM) is an emerging trend in the network security appliance market. Always on the cutting edge, ZyXEL’s ZyWALL 5 UTM is capable of outperforming the current ZyWALL 5 by up to 20 times with just a ZyWALL Turbo Card. This new technology introduces a new all-in-one network security device that provides content filtering, anti-virus, anti-spam and intrusion detection services traditionally handled by multiple systems. From a business perspective, IT managers should consider an “enterprise approach” for comprehensive security.
Jerry Tarrer asked:

Crime continues to rise not just in a physical sense but also in the world of white-collar business. Security cameras have become a worthy ally to many in the detection and prevention of crime. A simple observation of the city will tell you security cameras are everywhere these days.

Once used in their infancy as a traffic-monitoring device, remote security cameras are becoming the weapons of choice in the war against terrorism and crime around the world.

Wireless Security Cameras

If you need to partially conceal your cameras from view, wireless security cameras are the way to go. Wireless security cameras have become very popular because they can literally be put anywhere you want since you don’t have to worry about wires.

Additionally, wireless security cameras are becoming more and more affordable as the technology makes leaps and bounds- both in terms of the cutting edge new features and in the manufacturing and design process.

Home Security Cameras

Like most technology, the cost of home security has come down in recent years and the outdoor security cameras are no exception. With the right set-up the signal from your security cameras can be fed to your television for convenience - you don’t have to go to a special monitor to see the picture.

The best way that parents can protect their children 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and still have a life is to install security cameras as part of their security systems.

Home security cameras won’t just catch the worst possible acts of child violence and abuse, but also irresponsible babysitters who may not be cruel but are far too careless to be given the responsibility of watching your child.

Security Camera Location

To ensure the most effective surveillance of your home, the placement of your security cameras is of utmost importance. The proper placement of security cameras coupled with a recorder, permits you to maintain a record of many activities in your home, and you will be able to easily identify a person by the clothes he or she is wearing.

Don’t Bust the Budget

For those who are on a budget and can’t afford or don’t want to spend the time setting up a security system or hire someone else to do it, there are temporary measures you can use. You can consider using fake security cameras for the job if money is a major consideration in your home security budget, and you just can’t afford the real thing yet.

Whatever the variety and model that exist in the market for real surveillance cameras, dummy security cameras are there with the same exact look and feel.

Dummy security cameras can be fitted to the interior of your home as well as mounted on the exterior. You can use dummy cameras in various places on your lawn or patio, which can act as a sort of “scarecrow” for would-be thieves.

Out Door Cameras

For the best security system possible, you can have outdoor security cameras installed. Your outdoor security cameras can come with sunshades to protect the equipment from too much sunlight during daytime.

A large number of exterior cameras are weather proof, waterproof and some are even “hammer” proof. Some of the more sophisticated outdoor security cameras have an infrared option, which enables you to see what’s going on in the dark.

Security at School

The surveillance cameras allow school security personnel to do more job-specific work, which saves money in the long run since the mundane tasks will be performed by the security system. As mentioned, one of the best features about wireless security cameras are that they can be easily installed almost anywhere.

The cameras deter crime and may lead some students to confess to infractions that weren’t even caught on the security cameras.

Remote Cameras

Furthermore, remote security cameras are being used more and more to watch the habits of people in crowded areas, subway stations, airports and others to try to stop a terrorist attack before it happens. Especially active in purchasing business security cameras are large casinos such as in Las Vegas and Atlantic City.

In conclusion there is no doubt that society is still getting used to the presence of security cameras and there are many that don’t like them. However home and office security cameras and basic surveillance tips will greatly improve the safety of you and your loved ones at home and on the job.

Copyright © 2007 Jerry Tarrer

http://www.securityspy4u.com

CONRAD

learn To Install Car Audio & Car Security Systems

Have you been searching all over the internet for good, useful information on car audio and car security systems, only to not find what you’re looking for? That’s because a lot of the ‘helpful’ car audio sites are not written by professional installers… but you’ve come to the right place. My name is Dave, and I have over 12 years experience in the car audio industry -selling, installing, managing, you name it. I have been certified by the MECP (Mobile Electronics Certification Program) as both a “Product Specialist” and “Installer First Class”. My years of experience can help you save money by doing your own installs and by being a smarter shopper. By doing your own installs, you could save $30, $40, even $50 dollars an hour on labor charges! And save more on purchases!
Even after all of my years in the car audio industry, it still amazes me to see so many people being given bad information or doing their own installs wrong. I talk to people everyday that have gotten their information from (obviously) the wrong sources; people who don’t fuse their power wires, build leaky boxes, and have a mess of wires running through their trunk. Not only do these installs sound bad and look bad, but they can be dangerous and will often damage your equipment. If you want to learn to install like a professional, you’ve got to learn from one!

EUGENE
